Loft Conversions Nationwide — From Start to Finish
Once you have been in touch, we'll start with planning permission, if needed. We'll follow up with a survey of the loft hatch and the stairwell that will be built. We'll talk about what you want from the loft, whether that is an ensuite or a dormer. We'll explain pricing before work starts.
How we survey your loft and staircase.
Our survey starts at the loft hatch. We check for rot, insect damage, access clearance. We check the roof space with a torch to check for rain ingress, cold bridging, condensation. We measure the space between the joists, check ceiling height. On a terraced house, we check the wall plate behind the guttering for rot, cracks.
What to do until work begins
- 1 Keep the loft hatch clear of stored items, ready for our survey.
- 2 Ensure the loft is accessible, with any existing stairs in good condition.
- 3 Allow clearance around the soil stack, boiler and consumer unit for inspection.
- 4 Check the street has parking spaces for our vans, away from the kerb.
- 5 On a bank holiday weekend, note any noise from the flat above that goes into the loft.
Watch out for
- ✓ If the joists are sistered, they may be undersized
- ✓ Any rotten timbers will need replacing before work starts
- ✓ Water ingress is common in the winter months
- ✓ Check for cold bridging around the soil stack or boiler
- ✓ Insulation may need to be stripped out temporarily.
